Abstract

A new signature-table technique is described together with an improved book-learning procedure which is thought to be much superior to the linear polynomial method. Full use is made of the so-called “alpha-beta” pruning and several forms of forward pruning to restrict the spread of the move tree and to permit the program to look ahead to a much greater depth than it otherwise could do. Unsupervised machine learning for project stakeholder classification: Benefits and limitations

The literature has shown that an accurate classification of project stakeholders allows for more comprehensive planning of their management strategies. The most used classification methods have limitations stemming from using a small number of stakeholder attributes thus returning high-level and imprecise classification results. This work investigates the potential benefits and limitations of adopting unsupervised machine learning clustering as an alternative method to automatically recognize stakeholder groups. The paper demonstrates the application of a PAM algorithm for project stakeholder classification, employing qualitative and quantitative data collected from a real project in an IT Italian company. The results show that the use of unsupervised clustering leads to a more granular and detailed stakeholder grouping that enables the design of better refined and customized stakeholder management strategies. Furthermore, the results of the paper demonstrate that the use of this methodology, when data is taken from a structured dataset, reduces the degree of subjectivity in classification, promoting a data-driven approach to project stakeholder management.
Biofuels for a sustainable future: Examining the role of nano-additives, economics, policy, internet of things, artificial intelligence and machine learning technology in biodiesel production

As the global population and economy grow, so does the energy demand. Over-reliance on non-renewable resources leads to depletion and price spikes, making renewable alternatives necessary. Biodiesel is an eco-friendly and non-toxic fuel that closely resembles traditional fossil fuels. It is produced from various sources, including animal fat, palm oil, and non-edible plant oil. Biodiesel releases fewer harmful air pollutants and greenhouse gases than fossil fuels and is simpler to manage. Despite these advantages, it cannot replace traditional diesel fuel on a large scale. This overview summarizes biodiesel production, explaining the different types of feedstock utilized and their benefits and drawbacks. Various biodiesel production methodologies are discussed. The primary objective of this article is to inform engineers, industrialists, and researchers involved in waste biodiesel, as well as to highlight waste biodiesel as a potential substitute for fossil fuels. This review article discusses the nano-additives in biodiesel and applications of internet of things, artificial intelligence, and machine learning in biofuel. This review shows that nano-additives can potentially improve biodiesel fuel properties, favorable economic and policy environments promoting biodiesel production, and internet of things, artificial intelligence, and machine learning technologies optimize the biodiesel production processes. These advances can help promote biodiesel as a cleaner, renewable energy source, lowering the consumption of fossil fuels. It also suggests further biofuel development by improving efficiency, expanding feedstock options, creating policy support, developing infrastructure, and increasing public awareness.

This paper introduces an Expert System acting as an intelligent agent to interrogate past aircraft occurrence data to support the aircraft occurrence investigators. This Expert System can potentially identify similar occurrences that provide indicators of contributing factors that may otherwise have been missed. This intelligence comes from the Expert System’s ability to learn from past occurrence data using the combined Fuzzy Logic System (FLS) inference technique and AcciMaps to emulate the aircraft occurrence investigators’ evidence analytical reason model. The learned expert knowledge is presented graphically and interactively to the user (investigator) using the AcciMaps. The paper includes an overview of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) investigation evidence analysis workflow, popular mainstream inference techniques used in Expert Systems, evaluation of the proposed Fuzzy Logic System (FLS) inference technique and AcciMap, including an example study. The FLS inference technique has met the Expert System requirements to support aviation occurrence investigations.
Characterizing fracture toughness using machine learning

Machine learning is an appealing approach to mimicking complex behavior (Heidaryan, 2019). Samuel (1959) originated machine learning by verifying that a computer program could learn to play a game better than a human being. Machine learning gives computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed and is useful when a problem either has no solution or the existing solution has a large number of tuning parameters (Nasrabadi, 2007).
The existing models for fracture toughness characterization based on nanoindentations that account for the fracture length are limited to simple (ideal) geometries that are absent in shales. The present study proposes two conceptual models to estimate the fracture length created by nanoindentations in shales. It also presents a workflow to apply the conceptual models and uses machine learning, enabling a systematic and automated analysis. The conceptual models assume that the induced fracture is in the first mode to determine the fracture toughness. In this study, fracture toughness is also determined by the energy method that relates the load-displacement hysteresis to the fracture toughness without restricting the fracture mode. The present study sheds light on the complexities of characterizing fracture toughness using nanoindentations and has applications in the petroleum industry. The conceptual models are appealing for formation characterization using small pieces, such as drill cuttings, when large samples (~2.5 cm) required for conventional tests are unavailable. The conceptual models have applications in estimating fracture toughness when the induced fracture patterns become more complex.
Artificial intelligence in information retrieval systems

A survey is given of the potential role of artificial intelligence in retrieval systems. Papers by Bush and Turing are used to introduce early ideas in the two fields and definitions for artificial intelligence and information retrieval for the purposes of this paper are given. A simple model of an information retrieval system provides a framework for subsequent discussion of artificial intelligence concepts and their applicability in information retrieval. Concepts surveyed include pattern recognition, representation, problem solving and planning, heuristics, and learning. The paper concludes with an outline of areas for further research on artificial intelligence in information retrieval systems.
